Objective

In Lower School, students transition to a more structured approach to learning and acclimatise to exercises that seek to build upon their academic foundation and engage them in a participatory process.

At this stage, children approach the world of writing, gain comfort in learning, and possess a sense of autonomy. They display numerical fluency while beginning to develop collective awareness, which supports the formation of cultural capital.

Curriculum

1st to 5th grade

Our Elementary Years curriculum is designed for learners in the 1st to 5th grade. It is structured around the BNCC (Base Nacional Comum Curricular Brasileira) and the IPC (International Primary Curriculum), an English language curriculum based on the Project Methodology.

This integrated programme emphasises an investigative approach to learning. Typically, elementary teachers will raise a hypothesis of a topic and enlist the class to use their skills in critical thinking and comparisons to utilise prior knowledge and make informed observations. Elementary lessons offer opportunities to consolidate learning, referencing other subject material to aid understanding.

Elementary School subjects include: Portuguese; Language Arts (English); Mathematics; IPC/Science; History/Geography; LIV (Socio-Emotional Intelligence); Visual Arts; Creative Tech; Music; Drama and Physical Education and Sports.

Bilingualism

Approximately 60% of classes taught in English

From 1st - 5th grade, learners will develop excellent English language skills, with approximately 60% of classes taught in English, including Language Arts, Science, Creative Tech, Arts, Music, Drama and P.E.

Language Arts classes are based on the AERO Project (American Education Reaches Out), developed by the U.S. State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools to support schools outside the U.S. that implement an American curriculum.

We also adopted the Readers and Writers Workshop, an English literacy programme created by a professor at Columbia University. The engaging workshop combines the gradual development of technical competence with enjoyable reading and writing exercises to foster healthy practices.

LIV

Life Intelligence Laboratory

Our Life Intelligence Laboratory is a specially designed curriculum that is delivered to all students in Elementary socio-emotional lessons to establish the development of a healthy personal and social life.

Growing students can recognise and name complex feelings, such as jealousy, frustration, excitement and regret, and teaching staff aim to expand the understanding of three other vital aspects: self-regulation, relationship and empathy.

Pedagogical Routine

A typical day in the Elementary School community consists of breaks and classes that last 55 minutes. Regular intervals are given to pupils to eat, play, and rest in the morning, at lunchtime, and in the afternoon.

Each day begins with ‘Welcome Time’ and ends with the ‘Homeroom Station’, with each of these sessions offering an essential opportunity for Elementary pupils and teachers to talk and exchange information.

Field Trips

Class Without Walls

It is the role of the school to work on issues that exist beyond its walls. In addition to academic study, research shows that children's social relationships and engagement with school increase exponentially while on school trips.
Elementary School Field Trips identify places of interest, such as historical, artistic and scientific museums, parks, shows, etc. Each visit is designed to enhance project work currently delivered in the classroom.

Once a year, learners have a week of CWW (Class Without Walls), whereby classes are held outside the classroom. From 4th grade onwards, this comprehensive learning course may involve travel to nearby points of interest. In addition to creating unforgettable moments and memories for children, CWW ignites the development of autonomy, organisation and collaboration.
